Stroma lies two miles off the north coast of Caithness in one of the most stunningly beautiful seascapes in the world. I went out to the island with two friends, Roddy Ritchie and George Gunn, to look for film locations and after many adventures we stood inside a house overlooking the North Pier, so intimate, the box beds still intact. A community had lived here, buffeted by storms. Why had they left? Where had they gone? There was a story to tell, so we made a book about the island and islanders’, published by The Islands Book Trust .
